The latest update that Joe sent me on the Kalach playtest looked good from my initial scan of the situation. The German Panzer and Motorized formations penetrated as they should and caused some loose pockets among the Soviets. Joe correctly pointed out that a lot of Soviet formations can't establish MSRs, so the Soviets are nearing collapse about 4 turns into the playtest. I note that the 24th Panzer Division made progress in the south that's cutting out an MSR route that loops back north and wondered to Joe if that's what's causing the heartache among the Soviets. Playtesting can be a pain in the ass, with rules changes then restarts, more rules and other changes causing more restarts, and so on. We're trying not to change the design on a whim, there's a specific thing we're looking to do and Joe and I are keeping our eyes on the historical progress compared to how and what the game units are or could do. Other games that I listed in my wishlist to work on in 2023 didn't pan out. Jim Daniel's BCS Velikiye Luki didn't make any progress in terms of design, but it's still out there in a pending state. I made a lot of progress on the map in 2022 and early 2023 to the point where I think it's done. There's likely rework on the Order of Battle to clean up the formations. Little things that are being done in Kalach like how the Soviets are organized and rules governing them may work their way into Velikiye Luki as Dean is thinking about it. For now, BCS Velikiye Luki is on the back burner and Jim Daniels' needs to bless it to formally submit it. I did make progress on BCS The Breaking Point, my design on France (and Belgium) 1940. I got it to the point where I have the campaign set up and Order of Arrival. That was really difficult to put together given the dearth of information (recall my carping about the lack of information on German infantry divisions here. The Game Specific Rulebook is quite barebones, but I generally don't like to prefill it with much, particularly the opposing sides' specific rules until formal playtesting because that is when things really shake out and require game specific rules to guide the game along historical and chromey needs. And I'm in no rush to get it done if Kalach/Chir isn't that close to being done and if BCS Gela is looking to follow Kalach/Chir. Patience.Īnd I did tease BCS Gela, the game that will use the larger hex and counters a la Arracourt to be catered to a good introduction for BCS. Dean never told me outright but I suspected that he was getting a prototype ready for Winter Offensive.
