In July 2012, a simulator ride attraction named Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem opened up at Universal Studios Florida, which features a short film starring the characters. In 2013, the yellow pill-shaped characters made their reprisal in the sequel film Despicable Me 2 (shown below, right), in which the Minions play a larger role in the storyline as some of them are turned into purple-furred mutant savages by another villain Eduardo Pérez.Īs the popularity of the minor characters continued to grow, three short films loosely connected to the storyline of Despicable Me were released with the DVD edition that same year, Home Makeover, Orientation Day and Banana, in all of which the Minions are prominently featured as main characters. ![]() Upon the premiere of Despicable Me in 2010, the film was mostly met with positive reviews from the critics and moviegoers, many of whom also highlighted the adorability of the curious and mischievous Minions for their cute appearance and quirky demeanors. ![]() The Minions were first introduced as the supervillain antagonist Gru's personal army of clumsy but lovable assistants in the original film Despicable Me (shown below, left). Since making their debut appearance in the 2010 feature film, the Minions have become a hallmark of the popular film franchise, spawning an extensive line of character merchandises, several short films and even a full-length spin-off prequel film centered around their lives. Minions are yellow, dwarf-like characters who serve as the mischievous henchmen of the main super-villain protagonist Gru in the American computer-animated comedy film franchise Despicable Me. On August 9th, he posted a video to TikTok officially announcing the Hector Cult, sharing a profile picture for members to use showing himself looking up into the camera as Hector (see Template), garnering over 400,00 views in two days (shown below, right).Despicable me, minion, hate, fandom, social media About On August 7th, the TikToker posted a video where he puts on Hector cosplay, a character from Despicable Me garnering over 490,000 views in four days (shown below, left). On August 2nd, 2022, TIkToker posted a video claiming he would announce a new cult on the upcoming Friday, gaining over 900,000 views in a week (shown below). In late July 2022, the Ara Ara Army, another TikTok cult, was created to combat the Minion cult. On June 30th, posted a video to TikTok expressing shock over the growth of Minion Cult, gaining over 330,000 views in under a day (shown below). On June 30th, HITC and Dexerto reported on the Minion Cult. TikTokers began changing their profile pictures to the image and posting videos encouraging others to join (examples shown below). The cult founder posted two more videos to TikTok encouraging viewers to join the cult on June 29th, 2022, gaining over 433,000 and 196,000 views respectively in a day. The video gained over 425,000 views in a day (shown below). WE ARE MOONIONS." The video offers a cropped screenshot from the video showing him holding up "the moon" meant to denote members of the cult. On the same day, posted a video to TikTok captioned, "I'm starting a minion cult. On June 30th he posted the clip to TikTok, gaining over 23,000 views in a day (shown below). On June 27th, went live on TikTok to "steal the moon." During the livestream, he wore his Minions costume and had someone throw a glowing white ball (representing the moon) at him, then proceeds to dance after. The TikToker continued to tease this event over the following days (example shown below, right). On June 18th, 2022, the TikToker announced in a video that he would steal the moon on June 27th as an act of retaliation for being ignored, gaining over 574,000 views in just under two weeks (shown below, left). However, his efforts went unseen by the production company. In May 2022, TikToker who occasionally posts videos in a Minions costume, started posting videos asking viewers to tag the Minions TikTok page and get him invited to the premiere of Minions: The Rise of Gru. ![]()
